Check your National Insurance record before 5th April 2025

The UK government has extended the window for making voluntary National Insurance (NI) contributions, giving individuals until the 5th April 2025 to fill any gaps dating as far back as 6 April 2006. After this date, only the most recent six tax years will be eligible for top-up payments. This extended deadline offers a one-off opportunity to enhance your future State Pension entitlement by reviewing and updating your NI record.

Why gaps in your NI record matter

Your NI record determines how much State Pension you may receive. To qualify for the full new State Pension, you typically need 35 qualifying years. A minimum of 10 years is required to receive any State Pension at all. Gaps can occur for a variety of reasons, including time spent in education, living abroad, unemployment, having income only from sources that don’t trigger pensionable earnings (e.g. dividends or property rental profits, etc) or low earnings. Without intervention, these missing years could reduce the amount you’re entitled to when you reach retirement age.

How to review your record

It’s quick and easy to check your NI record through HMRC’s online service. Once logged in, you can see any incomplete years and view a forecast of your State Pension based on your current record. This gives you a clear picture of where you stand and whether any action is needed to protect or increase your entitlement.

Should you make voluntary contributions?

If you do have gaps, it’s important to assess whether making voluntary contributions is a financially worthwhile step. The cost of filling each year will vary, and the return depends on how close you are to retirement and how many qualifying years you already hold. While it can be a valuable investment, it’s not always the right decision for everyone. That’s why getting professional advice before making any payments is strongly recommended.
